Manchester United beat Crystal Palace 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday to earn new caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick a positive start to the Premier League.
The hosts grabbed the all-important goal 13 minutes from time when Fred curled his second Premier League goal of the season past Vicente Guaita.
The Eagles gave a brave defensive display as they sought to avoid a third consecutive loss, but this would prove futile as United, who were denied on several occasions, kept raiding the visitors area buoyed by the prospect of climbing up the League standings.
“I am very happy with the way the team performed, especially the first half hour, with the pressing, it was exceptional. The only thing missing was the 1-0 or 2-0,” said Rangnick after the game.
“The way we defended, we had control of the whole game, the clean sheet was the most important part.”
“These are the things we must improve. We need to keep clean sheets. With just the one training session, I was really impressed. We did much better than expected,” he added.
On his part, Crystal Palace manager Patrick Viera expressed his disappointment at the loss, noting that a draw would have been a fair result.
“I thought the game would finish with a draw. Neither side created too many chances. When we had that chance with Jordan [Ayew] we didn’t take it. Against the big teams you get punished. In these games you have to score those,” he said.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes he can survive Manchester United’s dreadful run of form and confirmed he did speak to Sir Alex Ferguson when he visited the club’s training complex this week.
The Manchester Evening Newsrevealed Ferguson, the former United chairman Martin Edwards and ex-chief executive David Gill all arrived at Carrington on Tuesday, when the United squad returned for their first training session following the 5-0 home humiliation by Liverpool on Sunday.
Despite attempts to downplay Ferguson’s visit and suggestions he did not speak with Solskjaer, the United manager clarified he did have a chat with the Scot.
“Yes, on both accounts, if that’s short and sweet,” Solskjaer replied when asked if he spoke with Ferguson and felt he could survive United’s perilous period. “Joking apart, we had a commercial day, and Sir Alex came to do some commercial stuff and I met him and spoke to him for a brief moment because he was in there with Cristiano [Ronaldo].
“I’ve been through some very bad moments here as a player and when I’ve been a manager I’ve dealt with setbacks.

What you need to know:
United are already eight points off the pace at the top of the table and there is a growing consensus that they need a coach to match the calibre of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Chelsea’s Champions League winner Thomas Tuchel.
Solskjaer has led United to two consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager in 2013, but his time looks to be running out.
Manchester
Manchester United’s historic 5-0 thrashing at the hands of fierce rivals Liverpool has left manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job despite signing a new three-year deal just three months ago.
Solskjaer has failed to win a trophy in nearly three years in charge at Old Trafford and tangible signs of progress after finishing second in the Premier League last season have been blown away amid a run of five defeats in their last nine games.

Solskjaer has led United to two consecutive top-four finishes for the first time since Alex Ferguson’s retirement as manager in 2013, but his time looks to be running out.
AFP Sport looks at five of the candidates to replace the 48-year-old if and when he is shown the door at Old Trafford.
Antonio Conte
A proven title winner, Conte turned a Chelsea side that had finished 10th the previous season into Premier League winners in his debut campaign in England in 2016/17.
The Italian is without a club having left Inter Milan in May after ending their 11-year wait to win Serie A.
Conte appears a perfect fit to solve United’s defensive woes that have blighted their season. Solskjaer’s men have kept one clean sheet in 21 games and shipped 11 goals in a week against Leicester, Atalanta and Liverpool.
However, Conte’s fiery temperament and tendency to fall out with his superiors could count against him.
“He’s not a fit for United,” said former United captain Gary Neville on Sunday.
Zinedine Zidane
Expectations were high for United to challenge for major trophies this season after the signings of serial winners Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane, along with £73 million ($100 million) winger Jadon Sancho.
Three of Ronaldo and Varane’s Champions League titles came under Zidane at Real Madrid and the Frenchman is also a free agent having ended his second spell with the Spanish giants in May.
Zidane proved himself a master of moulding a star-studded squad into a team at Madrid, where he also won two La Liga titles.
That is exactly what United need and his global profile fits the brand-building exercise the English giants have gone down in recent years, at times to the detriment of a well-functioning team on the field.
Brendan Rodgers
The outstanding option on the domestic market for United is Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.
The Northern Irishman’s past as a Liverpool manager may rule him out for many United fans, but he has rebuilt his reputation since a rollercoaster three years at Anfield between 2012 and 2015.
Rodgers proved himself capable of handling the demands of winning every week in three years at Celtic, where he won a clean sweep of seven domestic trophies before returning to the Premier League with Leicester.
The Dutchman is responsible for arguably the form team in Europe right now with Ajax cruising towards the last 16 of the Champions League and another Eredivisie title after thrashing PSV Eindhoven 5-0 on Sunday.
Ten Haag was linked with a number of top jobs after leading the four-time European champions to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 1997 two years ago.
But unlike many of his players from that run, he is yet to be poached by one of Europe’s top clubs.
The former Bayern Munich youth team coach would fit the attacking style demanded of a United manager, as exhibited by a 4-0 thrashing of Borussia Dortmund last week.
Luis Enrique
The Spain coach is another with plenty of experience in getting the best out of a collection of talented individuals.
He won the treble in his first season at Barcelona and added another La Liga title with a front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Fluent in English, Luis Enrique has never hidden his desire to one day coach in the Premier League
His success with Spain this year at Euro 2020 and the Nations League finals shows he is also capable of producing an exciting side without the same quality of stars he had on offer at the Camp Nou.
Only three Africans have scored over 100 Premier League goals: Didier Drogba, Mohamed Salah & Sadio Mane
On Sunday, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah became the top-scoring African in Premier League history.
The Egyptian started the day level with Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba, who accumulated 104 goals over two spells with the London club before his eventual departure, for a second time, in 2015.
But as Salah became the first away player to score a Premier League hat-trick at Manchester United, in Liverpool’s stunning 5-0 win, so the 29-year-old not only broke Drogba’s record but went clear on 107 goals too.
Salah, who also has a previous affiliation with the European champions, has become one of the Premier League’s most prolific forwards since joining Liverpool from Italians Roma in 2017.
Below, former Nigeria international Yakubu Aiyegbeni, who struck 95 Premier League goals, rates the merits of each player.
“If you can score goals in the Premier League, there’s nowhere in the world you can’t score goals,” he told BBC Sport Africa.

Dubbed the ‘Egyptian King’ by Liverpool fans, Salah netted 19 goals as the Reds ended their 30-year wait for a domestic top-flight title last year.
The 29-year-old, a two-time BBC and Caf African footballer of the year, also opened the scoring as the Anfield side beat Spurs to win the Champions League in 2018-19.
In his four full seasons on Merseyside, Salah has not dipped below 15 league goals, a level of consistency which has swiftly lifted him up the African Premier League scoring chart.
He initially moved to England in January 2014, joining Chelsea from Basel, but only scored twice in 13 league outings for the Blues before two loan spells in Italy.
“He’s so clever – his movement is unbelievable,” Yakubu said. “He’s not a striker, so he can drop into the middle or wide [areas]. It’s all about movement: he knows where to go, where to place himself.
“Players like Salah are very rare in modern football, a proper rare breed and special player. Barcelona had Lionel Messi and Liverpool have Salah, they both make things happen for their respective clubs, they have that powerful effect.”
Didier Drogba – 104 goals
(Chelsea 2004-12 and 2014-15)

Drogba’s goals helped Chelsea end a 50-year wait for a league title and re-establish themselves as one of England’s top clubs following Roman Abramovich’s takeover.
He won three league titles in his first spell, and a fourth following his return to Stamford Bridge.
Throw in an integral role in winning four FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League in 2011-12, and Drogba is undoubtedly a modern-day legend in west London.
“If you cannot score goals in Chelsea, then the league is not for you,” Yakubu said.
“You’ve seen so many top strikers in Chelsea that struggled to score. It’s not like they’re not good players, but the Premier League is hard.”
Sadio Mane – 100 goals
(Southampton 2014-16, Liverpool 2016-present)
Sadio Mane has 103 goals in all competitions for LiverpoolGamesMins per goal Right foot Left
Senegal international Mane first shone at Southampton, netting 21 times – including the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history – in two seasons with the Saints in the top flight.
Since his switch to Liverpool in 2016, Mane has dovetailed with Salah to bring the Premier League, Champions League, European Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup trophies to Anfield.
Yakubu believes the reigning African Footballer of the Year makes the most of his explosive pace and quick thinking.
“Mane is quick,” he said. “He’s all about being in the right position, and being smart. If you play against him, you can’t switch off.
“He is also very incisive in front of goal. Mane can spring up in the right place when you least expect. Both Salah and Mane have proven that African players can deliver at top clubs.”
‘I remain one of the top strikers from Africa’
Yakubu sits fifth on the list of all-time African goalscorers in the Premier League, just behind Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor’s 97 for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace.
The Nigerian featured for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn Rovers over a nine-year period, and believes his record stacks up favourably considering his club’s comparatively lower standings.
“I’ll still remain one of the top strikers from Africa, no matter if those guys score more than 100 goals,” he said. “Don’t forget they played for some of the biggest clubs in England.
“To score 15, 17 goals in Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Blackburn is big as well. If you can get 15 goals in a season as a striker in England, it’s a great season for you.
Twenty-five of Yakubu’s 95 goals in the Premier League came for Everton
“For me, it’s an honour to score that many goals. I got injured and didn’t play for one year. If I had, I would’ve scored more than 100. I had chances to do it, but the time was right for me to leave, so I went to China.”
As for current players, Manchester City’s Algeria international Riyad Mahrez (67) – sixth on the list – and Arsenal’s Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (66) – seventh – still have some way to go to trouble the top five.
Manchester United’s players need time to adjust to each other and their playing styles, forward Cristiano Ronaldo said, encouraging his team to overcome their inconsistent start to the Premier League campaign.
United brought in the likes of Ronaldo, forward Jadon Sancho and centre back Raphael Varane in the close season but have made a stuttering start domestically to sit sixth in the table with 14 points from eight games.
“The adaptation will take time, even the system of the game that we play, but I think step by step we have to put it in our mind that everything is possible,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports.
“I don’t speak only about my individual stuff, I put the collective in first place. To win things as a collective – it’s more easy to win individual stuff – I still think it’s possible.”
Ronaldo has made a strong start to his second spell at the club, scoring six goals in all competitions so far. The 36-year-old called for “sacrifice” from his colleagues to lift the team.

“Seriously, he’s so so good in front of goal. Its a massive result for the team and for the spirit of the team,” he added.
United had fallen a goal behind to Paco Alcacer’s 53rd- minute opener before drawing level with a brilliant volley from Alex Telles but failing to make the most of the momentum shift.

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed to help ensure the Reds will, step by step, compete for the big trophies.
The brilliant no.7 marked his second debut with the opening two goals in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United and took time out afterwards to speak to MUTV’s Stewart Gardner at a still-noisy Old Trafford. The interview is available to watch in full in our.
He was adamant that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are on a path to challenging for the Premier League and Champions League, with the European competition getting under way on Tuesday with our next fixture, against Young Boys.
The club’s strength in depth was highlighted by the impact of substitutes Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, who bagged the fourth goal, and Ronaldo believes this will be of great benefit as the campaign wears on.
“As I told you before, we have huge potential,” he told club media. “We have fantastic players, a good coach, a good team. We need to build up the mentality to win the Premier League and even the Champions League.
“So I am here to help the team. I think we have the 11 that are playing and those on the bench that can help as well. We have a good team, as I told you, and the spirit is there.”
In his interview with MUTV, Ronaldo also discussed the fact that the fans joined in with his trademark celebration and supplied a message to the supporters who showered him with affection throughout a memorable afternoon at the Theatre of Dreams.
As well, he explained why he gave a speech to his team-mates on the eve of his second debut as the Reds can now look forward to the trip to Switzerland next week.

Cristiano Ronaldo was “super nervous” before scoring twice on his much-hyped Manchester United return in their 4-1 win over Newcastle, after which boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he has allowed fans to “dream” again.
The 36-year-old was making his first appearance for the club in 12 years as a party atmosphere hit Old Trafford.A
“I didn’t expect to score two goals,” the Portugal legend said.
“I expected one but not two. It was an unbelievable moment.”
Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 games goals for United between 2003, when he joined as a teenager, and 2009, when he went to Real Madrid for £80m.
In the next 12 years he scored 551 goals for Real and Juventus before a surprise £12.8m move back to United on deadline day.
One of his five Champions League wins and one of his five Ballons d’Or came during his time in England.
United fans have been ecstatic since – although they have had to wait a long time for his second debut because of the international break. There was a buzz around the ground hours before kick-off as they wore Ronaldo shirts and sang his name.
Even long after the final whistle when Ronaldo was speaking to BBC Sport, the fans in the ground were still singing loudly.
“It is unbelievable. When I started the game I was so nervous, I swear,” he said. “I did not expect that they would sing my name all game. The reception is incredible but I am here to win games and help the team.
“It was an unbelievable moment. I was super nervous and was thinking last night that I wanted to play good and show I was still capable of helping the team. This club is unbelievable and I am so proud. I am going to give everything to make them proud of me.
“Everyone knows the football in England is different than in any part of the world and to be honest it is the most special one. I arrived here at 18 and they treated my unbelievably and that is why I am back.”
Ronaldo put United 1-0 and 2-1 up with two of his six shots in the game.
His first Premier League appearance in 12 years and 118 days broke the old record for the longest period between matches, held by former Leicester and Crystal Palace defender Damien Delaney (11 years and 155 days from 2002 to 2013).
His 12 years and 124 days between consecutive Premier League goals is the second-longest behind ex-Everton and Wigan defender Matt Jackson.
He is the oldest player to score twice in a Premier League game since Burnley’s Graham Alexander in 2010, and the oldest player to score for United in the Premier League since Ryan Giggs in 2013.
‘It was like the old days’
Ronaldo’s goal was his 119th for United
Manchester United manager Solskjaer played with Ronaldo on his United debut back in 2003. He was delighted with the Portuguese’s return – and with the lift it seems to have given the club.
United have only won the league title twice since Ronaldo left in 2009 – and have not done so since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Their most recent trophy was the 2017 EFL Cup.
“I’m so happy for Cristiano,” he told BBC Sport. “I’m so happy for the team and supporters. You sense the atmosphere around the club since he signed. It could easily have been an anti-climax because expectations were so high.
“It feels like one of the old days. It’s special. Cristiano Ronaldo is a special man and a special player for us in the history of the club.
“He senses big moments and scores goals. He’s clinical, he’s ruthless. He’s lifted the team and everyone around the club.
“Everyone is dreaming. They can dream and we’ll focus.”
Ronaldo played more minutes in the league last season for Juventus than he did in any of his six seasons with United when he was in his teens and early 20s.
He scored 29 Serie A goals in 33 games to add to his Premier League (2008) and La Liga (2011, 2014, 2015) golden boots.
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who was still playing when Ronaldo was at United, was watching the game for BBC Match of the Day.
“Ronaldo punished Newcastle,” he said.
“Sometimes you’ve got to applaud someone. He’s been great for such a long time. To come in and do what he has done today – do what he’s been doing all his career – is phenomenal.
“You’ve got to hold your hands up and have huge respect for him. He keeps on going and going. There doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.”
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce, who played for Manchester United, said: “That is the goalscoring instinct of a centre-forward, where our defenders haven’t followed it in and he is on the end to get a tap in and change the game.
“If there is a genuine superstar among everyone, then this kid is, with what he has achieved. We have witnessed it again today. He is something else.”
Man Utd beat Newcastle 4-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford and it was a dream return for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The new Ronaldo
The last time the Stretford End watched Cristiano Ronaldo in action in red he was a fleet-footed winger with a box of tricks that should have secured him life membership in the Magic Circle.
A dozen years later, at 36, he is no longer that player. The stepover remains a weapon in his armoury – he tried five before taking a shot on in one first-half break – but he doesn’t run at defenders as often as he did.
He might have been reunited with the No. 7 shirt, but Ronaldo is a No. 9 now. His movement was good against Newcastle, he drifted left and right to try and get on the ball and swapped with Bruno Fernandes at times, but when United needed him most he was in front of goal, eyeing up the width of the posts.
His 119th Manchester United goal might have been his easiest. Freddie Woodman made a mess of Mason Greenwood’s shot and Ronaldo was where all good strikers should be, there to tap it into an empty net from three yards.
His second goal required a bit more finishing. Luke Shaw’s barnstorming run and pass set him up, but Ronaldo made the run of a world-class centre forward, peeling away from his marker to collect the pass and his first touch set him up for his second, which was unerring shot through Woodman’s legs.
AFHQ: Does Ronaldo arrival put the pressure on Man United to win the PL?
A lot of focus on the United players who will prove to be ideal teammates for Ronaldo has focused on Bruno Fernandes, but against Newcastle there were signs others might be just as important in making this work.
If Ronaldo was the inevitable star of the show and Fernandes made sure he wouldn’t be completely overshadowed, two other players deserve their names high up on the supporting cast in the credits.
Ronaldo’s goals came courtesy of good work from Greenwood and Shaw and those two might actually be the two who do most to keep Ronaldo in a good supply of goals.
Aside from the returning hero Greenwood was United’s most dangerous attacker down the right. He can learn from Ronaldo but his pace and ability to commit defenders will also free up space for Ronaldo. It was Greenwood’s shot that led to Ronaldo’s first goal, a tap-in as easy as they come for someone who had scored 674 career goals before kick-off.
Ronaldo’s penalty box instincts can benefit from Greenwood’s skill and sharpshooting, but this incarnation of him also thrives on service and nobody in this United squad is as reliable with their deliveries as Shaw.
The left-back was on set-piece duty all afternoon and while none of his corners found the Portuguese, he did pick him out for the second goal with a perfectly weighted pass after a blistering run through the middle of the pitch. It’s early days but you can see Shawe assisting Ronaldo on a regular basis this season.
